With Lieut. Stewart and Sergt. Grant accompanied Capt. Pudman through the road, which we found in very critical condition. The length through upper part of Rouquemaison is quite bogged and traffic taken thro’ on sleeper tracks. In the road met Lieuts. Hazell and Mitchell who are doing duty here. In the afternoon met C.R.O.VII Corps, Capt. Dawson.
No instructions. Town Major advised me to call and see French Engineer Major in charge of roads. Had lunch with this officer and afterwards went to his office – where I rang up H.W. at St. Pol – Was told we were intended for work on Doullins-St. Pol road. – Later range up Seventh Corps who said instructions would be sent. Left a note at R.T.O.’s office for Capt. Pudman who in the evening called to see us. He told us of work and organisation.
Received orders to move forward. During day packing up and making preparations for move. Camp Commandant inspected camp at 6, said he was very satisfied with way our lines had been kept during our stay. Mule discovered with cracked hoof and was exchanged for sound mule from Remount Depot. Transport moved off at 6.45 – men followed at 7.00. All entrainted by 9 and found trian was not timed to start till 12. Our destination is Douillins – Stopped at [word unclear] about 5 where hot water was supplied – very slow journey – reached Amiens about 1 – just outside Doullins at 6 but didn’t get into station till about 7.45. Left men at station and went to Town – Major gave me list of billets – Went round with Q.M. – very poor billets indeed – got men in by about 10.
Last night the clocks were put forward one hour. During the day unofficially I heard that we were to move forward tomorrow.
Still no orders to move. We are getting very tired of being here – the men are confined to campand as there is no comfort here they are all ready to move. 31 on sick parade this a.m. mostly coughs. I have got a bad cough and so have the other two officers.
More snow – Camp very draughty and cold and quite a lot of the men have bad coughs.
Cold wet day – About midday No. 335 had orders to move forward at 7 p.m. The transport of 330 Co. were detached from No. 335 and attached to No. 336. In evening I got orders that this transport would entrain at 2 in the mornign and had to leave camp at 12.
No. 335 moved off at 7 and we moved into their orderly room – Transport for No. 330 moved off at midnight.
