Got up in time for lunch – found the w.p.’s had been arranged to carry on with trench work tonight. Left Englebelmer about 8.15 with Budgett and 15 sappers – found roads chock a bloc with artillery limbers and guns, also infantry – Plain in font of Englebelmer thick with guns, many only just arrived.

Trench work interfered with by machine gun and rifle fire – Just about 2 a.m. got hit in the right leg – got down to field dressing station, where the wound was dressed and waited until daylight before going forward. Budgett came to see me and there lent me money, took my revolver and prismatic compass.
