Reveille at 4 a.m. – after a breakfast of tea and bread and butter we got on the march just after 6. We joined the Divisional column but made very slow progress and in Sucheux Forest came to a full stop. A very heavy gradient in front was holding up the whole column. After waiting 4 hours we left the scheduled route and set off on a route of our won through Doullens – a longer way round to our destination but with easier gradients.

About 5 the Major and I rode forward in advance of the transport and reached Acheux about 7.45 – men by train arrived about 8.30 and were quarters in shelters in the wood – the transport arrived about 9.45 – after a very heavy day.
