Up at 5a.m. raining heavily – had everything packed up and paraded men by 7.30 – moved off promptly at 8 with tool carts etc. in column of route. Genl. Phillips came on road part of way – took the salute and then returned – we reached Frevillers about 10.30 – tiny country village – men billeted inn good barns – houses not all damaged by shell fire and country showing no signs of war.

Found a good piano in the mess and after dinner began to play – much to everyone’s amusement. The enthusiasm was tremendous and very soon all the members of the mess we’re dancing up and down the mess making as much row as they could – from then on until 11 we had a night of it – and a very memorable night too.
