Received orders to proceed with 2 men as advance billeting officer, – to go by train to St. Pol where an omnibus would meet us. Reported at Port St Remy at 6.30 p.m. – found 11 officers and about 30 me were also going forward on same errand as us. Train due to start at 7.30 left at 8.10 – got to Abbeville at 8.30 where we all had to turn out. Told that train would go forward at midnight. Officers were allowed to leave the station but as places were closed at 9.30 we got back to the station about 10. The buffets were all closed but across the sidings was a B.E.F. canteen – kept open all night  – which proved a godsend. Train did not leave until 2.25 and we got up to Etaples at 4.20 were shunted into a siding and after a time were told train would go forward at 9.
