Heard news of surrender of Genl. Townshend in Mesopotamia, this is v. bad news. Nelson battalion has sports on their parade ground. Marine band from Exmouth – sister ship of Russell – played during afternoon.

Had two parcels by parcel mail.

With Major Aveling and orderly rode over to E. Nucdros – had a most enjoyable day. Inspected road and had lunch at R.E. Yard. Rain fell between 12 and 2 and we were fortunate to be under cover. Had most interesting chat with the Major. He told me of his interest in the double weighbridge and of his father’s introduction of steam-rollers etc. He knows Mr. Hatfield and quite a lot of municipal engineers. Got back to H.Q. and had tea there with Major Aveling, Rugg and Lieut. Taylor.
