Begin O.O. had to get up to inspect men’s sleeping quarters and during day inspect meals. Had charge of the tobacco and soap issue, each man being able to draw 1lb of tobacco (½d.) and 1lb of soap. A magnificent day, hot sun, blue sky with white fleecy clouds and smooth sea – sighted a French battleship. We have not yet sighted Gib and it is evident that we are cruising about in the open sea ready to go through the Straits after dark.

After dinner – went up on deck and found we were just about to pass Gib. Saw the lights of the rock and also the African and European coast lines – a magnificent moonlight night with calm sea.

Have now lost all feelings of sea sickness and am perfectly comfortable on the ship.
