On going on deck found we had quite lost sight of England. A fresh wind was blowing and a good healthy sea running. We sighted the lighthouse at Ushant about 10a.m. Most of the men are very ill and in their quarters below decks the conditions are awful. A large number of men were absent from parade and some of those present looked very ill.

I have not yet been sick but have not been at all happy – have been giddy, dizzy and have felt very sickly – hope this will soon wear off.

Later – Towards evening the wind increased in strength and the ship pitched and rolled a lot. For dinner I had bread and fruit but after dinner was ill for the first time. Got into bed very early.
