Diary of a WW1 soldier

Over the next months I will be publishing the WW1 diary of Lieutenant (eventually Major) James Brierley that takes us from Southampton to Gallipoli to the Western Front.

James was the Deputy Chief Engineer for Sheffield City Council before joining up on 27th September 1915.

Each entry will be a verbatim transcript of James’ diary so if there is a day missing, then 100 years later it will be missing here too.

The first entry will be on February 16th.

Note:  original spellings of place names from Uncle Jim’s diary are given – where the probably correct/current spelling is identified I will add this in square brackets eg Portzanos [Portianos]
